Death toll from Mnp landslide reaches 55; 1 body recovered

With one more body recovered on Saturday, the death toll from the devastating landslide at the railway construction site in Manipur’s Noney district climbed to 55.
The dead body whose identity could not be ascertained immediately was retrieved from the debris on the bank of Ijei River around 12.20 pm on Saturday, an official source said.
With the recovery of one more body, six out of 79 affected by the devastating landslide hit the railway construction site at Marangching area of Noney district where a camp of the 107 Territorial Army (TA) also located, were still missing.
The landslide hit on the intervening night of June 29-30.
The search and rescue operation launched by a Joint Task Force comprising Army, Assam Rifles, NDRF, SDRF, CRPF, Army Medical Doctors, Manipur police, fire service personnel and local volunteers entered its 17th day.
The devastating landslide affected 79 people, mostly personnel of the TA and on the first day of the rescue operation, 18 persons were rescued alive.
A Joint Task Force comprising Army, Assam Rifles, NDRF, SDRF, CRPF, Army Medical Doctors, Manipur police, fire service personnel and local volunteers have launched the search and rescue operation.
Of the 79 missing, the search team has so far recovered 55 dead bodies including the one recovered today.
State disaster management minister Awangbou Newmai recently asserted that the state government will review the ongoing operation with all stakeholders on Monday to decide if the operation can continue.
