DoPN declares May, October ‘Vegetation Clearance Months’

As a preventive measure and in an effort to reduce power interruptions, the Department of Power Nagaland (DoPN) has declared May and October months of each calendar year as “Vegetation Clearance Months”.
While informing that most of the unscheduled power outages were caused due to vegetation/trees coming in contact with power lines, DoPN engineer-in-chief Nribemo Mozhui said these types of power interruptions, avoidable to a large extent, disrupted power supply network, causing much inconveniences to consumers and general public and also adversely affected equipment at power sub-stations thereby reducing their useful life.
He said that there had been many instances where restoration of power took days and even weeks together depending on the extent of damage and accessibility to the location of faults.
During these two months, the department said it would carry out extensive jungle cutting along the corridor of all extra high voltage, sub-transmission and distribution lines. To this effect, the department said it had issued a circular on April 8 to all working divisions for implementation.
Stressing that assistance of village councils, colony councils, NGOs and public in general would be required for successfully carrying out the exercise, the department appealed to the general public to extend support and cooperation during the vegetation/jungle clearance exercise and also provide necessary information to the department wherever such activities were required.
