Excise department destroys drugs worth Rs.1.15 crore

Narcotics and other drugs worth Rs.1.15 crore seized by narcotics cell and mobile squad were destroyed at excise office premises Dimapur on Saturday.
The destroyed seized items included 20kg Ganja, 1935gm heroin, 19397 bottles of Codeine-based Cough Syprup; 6,92,691 Capsules/Tablets of Spasmo proxyvon/Alprazolam and 2150kg of poppy straw.
Speaking at the joint destruction programme of narcotics cell and mobile squad, the commissioner of excise & prohibition, H Atokhe Aye, commended the two units for the “remarkable haul of seizures.”
Expressing concern over the steady rise in the usage of drugs especially brown sugar (‘sunflower’) among the younger generation over the recent years, the commissioner of excise & prohibition underscored the need to address the issue with all urgency before it assumes alarming proportion.
He said that the enforcement agencies like the excise department needed to be supported at all levels “in the fight against this dreaded menace.”
Atokhe, at the same time, reminded that it was the bounden duty of every citizen and social organization to play their role as responsible pillars of the society.
For effective implementation of the drug laws, he said proper training courses designed for the purpose of achieving greater convictions in the court of law were also being initiated under the training regime of the department.
The commissioner of excise & prohibition encouraged the personnel to keep up the good performance in the days ahead.
At the programme, brief reports on the seizures were read out by superintendent of excise, mobile squad and the narcotics cell.
Vote of thanks was proposed by assistant commissioner excise (ADM) Phyobemo Kikon.
The programme was chaired by deputy commissioner excise (Hqr & Enf) S Chanlei Angh.
