Few staff, too many patients at NEIGRIHMS

The North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) is increasing manpower and the number of operation theatres to deal with the increasing inflow of patients.
NEIGRIHMS is the only super-specialty medical institute in Meghalaya, The Shillong Times reported.
Nalin Mehta, the institute’s director told The Shillong Times that NEIGRIHMS has been grappling with staff shortages for some time now. “We have advertised for the (vacant) posts and done the internal screening. The problem should be addressed soon,” he said.
Officials from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare are doing the external screening following which the dates of the interview would be fixed.
According to the director, the number of people to be operated upon is far more than the number of operation theatres available. “Every hospital has a waiting list but it is a little longer in our case because of fewer OTs,” he said.
“Apart from the staff, we are increasing the number of OTs in three months,” Mehta said.
The operations are currently conducted depending on how serious the condition of a patient is, he said. The prioritisation of cases is the standard practice for every hospital in the world, he pointed out.
Many patients have been complaining that NEIGRIHMS makes them wait for months to get operated on.
