First open Javelin throw championship in Dimapur

Staff Reporter

The First State Open Javelin Throw Championship was held at Government Higher Secondary School ground (GHSS), United Colony, Dimapur, on Saturday. The championship was organised by Dimapur Athletics to commemorate the gold medal won by Neeraj Chopra in Tokyo Olympics 2020.
Addressing the gathering as guest of honor at the opening programme, ADC Dimapur, Mhalo Humtsoe stated that Nagas were athletic from the past adding that they were neither here, nor there. She lamented that most Naga parents only encouraged their children to opt for white collared jobs and considered their children as failure if they did not do well or secure low marks in their studies. She therefore appealed to the parents to encourage their children if they were interested in sports as education was incomplete without sports.
She expressed hope that the championship would further motivate and bring changes to the participants.
Meanwhile, exhorting the gathering at the closing ceremony, district sports officer, Tepulezonu Tetso urged the gathering to not take games and sports as recreation or a past time habit, but take it seriously as it has become a professional career. President, Dimapur Athletics, Bithungo Kikon, in his welcome address stated that the tournament was organised to instill inspiration among younger generation and for athletes to draw attention from the Gold medalist.
He informed that 122 participants took place at the First State Open Javelin Throw Championship.
Winners each category walked away with certificates and cash prizes of Rs. 5000, Rs. 3000 and Rs. 2000 for First, Second and Third respectively.
