Groups call for Bharat Bandh today against ‘Agnipath’ scheme; several states on high alert

As protests rage throughout the country, with rather lesser reported incidents on Sunday against the newly rolled out Agnipath recruitment scheme, several protestant groups have called for a Bharat Bandh on 20 June. Several states on Sunday tightened security in view of the reported call.
Haryana: Authorities will be deploying over 2,000 policemen across several pockets around Faridabad to ensure law and order in the city. As many as 12 police blocks have been put up, and videography will be done to keep an eye on anti-social elements.
Kerala: State police chief has said the entire force will be on duty to arrest anyone engaging in violence or destruction of public property. District police chiefs have been directed to prevent forced closure of businesses, and to provide security to institutions.
UP: Reiterating that Section 144 is already in place in the district, the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police warned FIR would be registered against anyone found engaged in activities that violate the law. UP, too, has seen violence during the agitation.
Punjab: The ADGP (law and order) has directed the force to monitor activities of social media groups that were allegedly spreading misinformation about the initiative.
Jharkhand: Police have also been put on high alert in Jharkhand while schools will remain shut on Monday in view of the bandh called over the Agnipath recruitment scheme, officials said. The ongoing exams of classes 9 and 11 have also been postponed.
