Kidnaped truck drivers rescued in Mnp

Suspected militants released two truck drivers they had kidnapped allegedly for ransom following a intensive rescue operation by Manipur police on Sunday.
The kidnapping of the drivers triggered a protest in the Imphal East district where the drivers hailed from. Protesters blocked main roads at Khurai Lamlong Bazar in protest against the kidnapping.
Suspected cadres of Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) kidnapped the drivers of a Jiri-bound truck leaving Imphal along Old Cachar Road on May 18 last. Old Cachar Road is currently used as an alternative route of the NH-37 after a bridge on the highway collapsed on May 12 last.
The two truck drivers – Thangjam Pal (42) of Khurai Puthiba Leikai and Maibam Mani (45) of Khurai Chingangbam Leikai, were reportedly whisked away after the truck they were driving was stopped at Khoupum Bazar in Noney district. They were allegedly kidnapped for ransom.
After kidnapping the drivers, the suspects demanded money for their safe release from the fertilizer agent who engaged the truck for shipping of the fertilizer, the family of the drivers alleged.
A police source said they have rescued the two drivers unharmed around 3 pm on Sunday and will be handed over to their respective families after completing formalities.
They said that a strong police force today launched an operation to rescue the drivers at some place where they (drivers) were held hostage.
The operation launched early Sunday morning concluded when they intercepted the drivers while the operation was in progress.
The abductors might have left behind the drivers on seeing the police force approaching, the police said.
Meanwhile, denouncing the kidnapping of truck drivers for ransom, locals of Khurai area of Imphal East district today imposed a road blockade, affecting normal vehicular movement on all roads passing through Khurai Lamlong Bazar area.
The locals were pressing the authorities of the state government to take up necessary steps for the safe release of the drivers.
The blockade also hit normal vehicular movement along Imphal-Ukhrul Road, Tinsid Road and Imphal-Saikul road that pass through Lamlong Bazar area.
Khurai Social Youth Club (KSYC) imposed the blockade demanding safe and unconditional release of the drivers and to take up necessary action to rescue the drivers
Market as well as shops and other business establishments in and around the Lamlong Bazar pulled down their shutters, showing solidarity to the demand.
No untoward incident related to the road blockade was reported.
