Man gets life term for rape of minor

Court of Special Judge, POCSO Act, Phek on Thursday convicted and sentenced a 51-year-old man to rigorous imprisonment for life for rape of minor girl on January 7, 2022.
The accused identified as Vesurayi Medeo, grandfather of victim by marriage and serving as head gaon bura (GB) of Phuyoba since 2009 was convicted and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for life and fine of Rs. 10,000 for commission of rape and aggravated penetrative sexual assault upon victim girl child. The victim was about 10-year-old when the incident occurred.
The accused was charged under Section 376(2)(f) IPC and Section 5(m)(n), 6 of POCSO Act.
He was also convicted of committing sexual assault and penetrative sexual assault and sexual harassment upon her in her bedroom under section 8, 10 and 11 of POCSO Act. He was also convicted for lurking house-trespass of the bedroom of victim and lurking house-breaking of the bedroom door of the victim under section 457 of IPC.
In her judgement, Special Judge Mezivolu T Therieh stated that it was expected from the accused, who is a father figure to the victim, to treat her with love and care. He is also the Head GB of Phuyoba Village since 2009 and therefore expected to work in public interest and honour the trust reposed on him by doing justice to all, the judge said.
The court has directed the state government to pay Rs.five lakh as compensation for the relief and rehabilitation of the victim girl child within 30 days from the date of receipt of judgment. The case was investigated by I.O UBI Lucy Doungel, O.C. Women P.S, Phek and Samuel Ritse, Special Public Prosecutor, POCSO Act, Phek led the prosecution.
