Manipur govt teachers stage protest


On the auspicious Teachers’ Day celebration, over 3000 government teachers converged at the office complex of the state education (school) directorate and staged a protest.
Teachers of Manipur government schools appointed under RMSA and SSA were on cease work strike in protest against a recent government order effecting a change in their salary drawing authority under the aegis of All Integrated Teachers’ Association, Manipur (AITAM).
Large number of striking teachers converged at the office complex of the education (s) directorate in Imphal and staged a sit-in-protest.
As per an order of the department of education (school) issued on August 12, a total of 3,480 teachers appointed under SSA and RMSA will have a separate new account head for their pay and allowance.
The teachers were protesting against the order alleging that it was an act of segregation among government teachers.
They said that SSA and RMSA teachers were integrated into the education department after their posts were regularized two years ago.
Since then they were drawing salaries “almost similar” to the regular teachers of the state education department.
During the protest, the teachers displayed placards read as “No segregation among teachers”, “Don’t demoralize teachers”, “No change in salary head”, “Equal work equal salary”, etc. were displayed.
Meanwhile, like in other parts of the country, Teachers’ Day was celebrated in Manipur too at various levels. Besides school level celebrations, the state government also hosted a celebration function to honour the people in the teaching profession.
The state level celebration held in Imphal’s City Convention Centre, seven school teachers were honoured with state teachers award.
Outstanding lecturers of government colleges were also honored with awards of various categories.
Addressing the occasion, state education minister Th Basantakumar Singh said that teachers were the most respected persons in the society.
They were the ones that made their students realize their dreams.
He further added that the hard-work, dedication and sincerity of the teachers should not be undermined in any circumstances.
