In a bid to enhance security for travellers along NH-2 in Manipur, the police department introduced a dedicated highway patrol equipped with GPS enabled vehicles.
Eight vehicles equipped with GPS and wireless communication sets will be used by the dedicated highway patrol that will cover the stretch of NH-2 from Mao of Senapati bordering Nagaland to Gamgiphai of Kangpokpi district.
The dedicated patrol can be reached by dialing 112 and PCR no. 8798198810 (for Senapati district) and 9362153322 (for Kangpokpi district).
The dedicated highway patrol will also act as first responders to any crime or distress along the highway, officials of the state police department said.
This is the first time the state police introduced the GPS enabled vehicles in providing dedicated security to the highway travellers.
These new vehicles would give a fillip to highway travellers and provide a security umbrella to truck drivers vulnerable to extortionists, a senior police officer said.
State police chief P Doungel introduced the dedicated highway patrol by flagging off the eight vehicles from the Senapati district headquarters in the presence of top officials of the state police department.
