Torrential downpour in the mountainous regions of Manipur triggered multiple landslides along the stretch of Imphal-Jiribam section of NH-37 early on Sunday.
The landslides at Nungdolan, Nungkao and Sibilong areas along the stretch of the highway in Tamenglong district disturbed normal vehicular movement on the second lifeline of the state.
Hundreds of vehicles, including a large number of Imphal-bound loaded trucks and passenger service vehicles, were stranded midways, reports said.
reports further stated that landslides that occurred early in the morning, brought down huge rocks that blocked the highway.
Informing of the multiple landslides that blocked the highway, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh, in a Facebook post, asked people to take care and avoid the highway for the time being.
“Due to continuous and heavy downpour and landslides, NH 37 has multiple road blockades at Nungdolan, Nungkao and Sibilong, he posted.
“Concerned authorities have been informed to clear the road,”he added
This is not the first time normal traffic along this section of the highway has been disturbed since the advent of the rainy season. It may also be noted that the rainy season started earlier than usual this year.
Apart from landslides on NH 37, heavy downpours on several occasions have wreaked havoc in several parts of the region with several landslides.
The multiple landslides that hit the normal vehicular movement on the second lifeline of the state came days after the devastating landslide that hit the 107 Territorial Army (TA) camp located at Tupul railway construction camp at Makhuam area of Noney district on June 30.
