Droupadi Murmu, the presidential candidate of National Democratic Alliance (NDA), who is on a hectic campaign trip to the states in the north east, was accorded a warm welcome by state chief minister Neiphiu Rio along with legislators of the United Democratic Alliance(UDA on her arrival at the airport here on Wednesday. After meeting state BJP leaders at the airport, Murmu was escorted to Niathu Resort where she held a meeting and also interacted with state legislators under UDA, which lasted around two hours.
Higher Education and Tribal Affairs minister and BJP State president Temjen Imna Along told Nagaland Post that since Nagaland had an opposition-less legislature under the banner of UDA and leadership of chief minister Neiphiu Rio, all parties had already decided to support the NDA presidential nominee.
“They have been very kind enough to completely and consciously support Droupadi Murmuji’s candidature to be the next President of this great country,”he stated. Planning & Coordination minister Neiba Kronu said all legislators who attended the meeting expressed full support to Droupadi Murmu as the NDA consensus candidate for president. Kronu informed that Droupadi Murmu worked as teacher and is a learned scholar. Kronu also said Murmu is a devoted lady who has keen personal interest in the welfare of tribal people.
He asserted that the UDA government was confident that she would become the first tribal lady President in the country.
It may be noted that Droupadi Murmu had served as governor of Jharkhand for five years.
Meanwhile, Nagaland Legislative Assembly speaker Sharingain Longkumer said the programme went well, adding that a warm welcome was accorded to her by the UDA government. He mentioned that the UDA government conveyed its good wishes to the presidential candidate, and that it was an honour for all to meet the first tribal lady presidential candidate.
Murmu also visited Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya earlier during the day. Meanwhile, there is considerable speculation that Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi union minister for minority affairs, was likely to be the NDA consensus candidate for the post of vice president of India and also chairman of Rajya Sabha.
Naqvi’s term as member of Rajya Sabha ends on Thursday. According to the Rashtrapati Bhavan statement, Union minister Smriti Irani will be given charge of the ministry of minority affairs in addition to her existing portfolio.
The nomination process for the election of Vice President has begun with July 19 being the last date for filling the nominations. Current Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu’s term comes to an end on August 10.
The scrutiny for the nominations will take place on July 20 and the final list will be published on July 22.
Nomination process for the post will be held on August 6 between 10 AM and 5 PM, where MPs of both houses are eligible to vote and the results are expected to be out on the same day.
