NWA felicitates medal winners


Naga Wrestling Federation (NWA) felicitated the two Naga wrestlers, Keduovilie Zumu and Nlumrai Hegwang, who bronze medals each at the recently concluded 6th International Sports Festival held at Kyrgystan, at a ceremony at Nagaland Olympic Association building, here on Monday.
Special guest, DGP, Nagaland, TJ Longkumer in his speech congratulated the two medal winners saying their hard work had brought laurels to the State.
He lauded NWA for its hardwork and support system that was aiding the youngsters to shine in sports thereby making Nagas proud.
He also lauded the association for providing a roadmap for its players by enabling them to get exposure even at the international level.
Sharing about his fondness for Naga wrestling, the DGP said, it was the traditional sport for the Tenyimia and was a heritage of their sporting past. Growing up in Kohima, we used to enjoy watching the game during the Angami and Naga wrestling meets, Longkumer said.
He expressed appreciation to the community for making the sport more inclusive by means of extending affiliation to other communities such as Wokha Wrestling Association and also from Aos which was in the process.
He said through the sport. Tenyimia were sharing their heritage with the whole Nagas.
About the recently inaugurated Nagaland Police Sports Battalion, Longkumer said it was the first of its kind in the country. He added that the department was working to turn the visions for the battalion into reality and that very soon the modalities would be approved by the government of Nagaland.
Earlier in his address, NWA president, Dr Hiabe Zeliang said it was the right time for the people to celebrate the achievements of the two wrestlers.
He disclosed that the association had also received the congratulatory note from All India Traditional Wrestling and Pankration Federation (AITWPF).
Dr Hiabe pointed out that realizing the importance of wrestling more people were coming forward to be part of the sport and subsequently Wokha District Wrestling Association was now affiliated to NWA while Ao Senden had also authorized its wrestlers to participate in NWA events. Similarly players from Rengma and Phom communities were also coming forward to be part of the sport.
He expressed hope that the lobby for wrestling to be included in the Olympics would be successful as it would open the door for Nagas to become Olympians.
Giving a brief account of their journey, Keduovilie Zumu said he and Nlumrai Hegwang participated in the Belt Wrestling Championship in the Pearl of Kyrgystan 2022 at Chon-sary-oi, Kyrgystan.
He said 30 countries took part in 36 sports disciplines at the event where he participated in the +80 kg category while Nlumrai took part in the 80 kg category.
He said their success at the event was a byproduct of all the investment, resources, time and efforts put in by the previous and present NWA teams.
He also thanked chief minister, State government and Wrestling Federation of India president, Mukhtar Umar for their constant support.
Earlier the ceremony was chaired by NWA vice president, Dr Dietho Koza while Rengma Baptist Church Kohima, associate pastor, Ayhunlo Kemp offered the thanksgiving prayer and Vevoto Ringa presented a special number.
