Sensitisation on HIV&AIDS, drug related issues

Advocacy and sensitisation programme on HIV& AIDS and drug related issues with stakeholders and high-risk groups was held on August 4 at Jakha town hall. The programme was organised by Nagaland Users’ Network (NUN) Targeted Intervention (TI) Jakhama and HCMC Jakhama supported by Nagaland Health Project (NHP).
In a press release, NUN TI Jakhama informed that director Kripa and advisor NUN, Abou Mero spoke on HIV and AIDS Act 2017 and Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
Mero said Section 2(1) of HIV AIDS Act stated that the act was extended to the whole of India and therefore Nagaland was no exception.
On NDPS Act, Mero said India was signatory to the three UN Conventions namely, Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs (1961), Convention on Psychotropic Substances (1971) and Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (1988).
Mero said substance use disorder was a serious problem and that dependence on substances not only affects health but also disrupts families and society. He called upon stakeholders for a collective effort to address substance use and abuse holistically.
NUN TI Jakhama, programme manager, Vikukhoto Rolnu suggested help from doctors or professional health workers. He also informed that OST was an organised treatment programme aimed at prevention of HIV. The programme was attended by around 80 stakeholders.
