Surveillance carried out to contain blast disease

In view of the occurrence of blast disease in jhum areas in 2021, where about 60% of the total area under jhum was devastated by blast disease, office of Sub Divisional Agriculture Officer (SDAO) Naginimora, Mon conducted surveillance and monitoring of pest and diseases on May 16-20 at the sub-division focussing on early detection and timely management of pest and disease.
A press release by SDAO Naginimora stated that the surveillance and monitoring was conducted with special emphasis on blast disease of rice in jhum paddy and Fall Army Worm (FAW) in maize.
During the survey, the department said it found that there was marked improvement in jhum paddy crop in 2022 as compared to 2021. However, blast disease was detected in about four hectares at Chingdang, Tanhai and Shiyong village and management measures were initiated.
It further informed that FAW was also detected in about 13 hectares in maize with mild to moderate degree of infestation and management was initiated for the same.
Meanwhile, SDAO Naginimora, Lawrence informed that the department will continue to monitor the situation closely and urged the farmers to report any incidence of agricultural pest and diseases promptly for timely intervention.
The release informed that the SDAO office also held interactive sessions with villagers for community mobilization in managing the disease.
