Locals protest against non-distribution NFSA rice

Correspondent IMPHAL, Apr 18 | Publish Date: 4/18/2020 10:11:02 AM IST
Locals in Manipur’s Imphal East district defied curfew and staged a sit-in-protest to highlight their plights when they were allegedly deprived of rice under National Food Security Act (NFSA) for months.
Locals of Top Khongnangkhong under Khurai Assembly constituency alleged that they have not been receiving rice under NFSA November 2019.
They further alleged not receiving rice which the state chief minister announced would be distributed free of cost during the first phase of 21-day-long lockdown.
Chief minister N Biren Singh had promised distribution of 20 kg of rice free of cost to each and every family of five members living under one roof at the rate of four kg per member.
The locals alleged that the same was yet to be distributed in their area till date and no one except a social activist distributed three kg of rice distributed free of cost out of his own expense.
A local woman leader participating in the protest alleged that before November last year, they received subsidised rate rice but not the exact quantity which can be received by a beneficiary.
They have been remaining silence thinking that the local MLA will one day arrange to make available the quota of rice for them.
The MLA has however failed to do so even after the first phase of lockdown has passed.
With lockdown affecting income and rice not available in the open market, daily wagers were at the threshold of their woes, she lamented.
The locals taking part in the protest warned of boycotting their local MLA (L Susildro of the ruling BJP) if he failed to intervene and ensure distribution of rice at the earliest.
