Manipur releases 69 prisoners to decongest jails

Jail authorities in Manipur released 58 prisoners on Saturday including a convict to take the total number of prisoners released in the state so far in the wake of COVID-19 to 69.

Earlier, 11 prisoners were release on parole from the Central Jail, Imphal on April 16. 

Sixty-nine prisoners including a convict were released to decongest jails in Manipur in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, an official source said today.

Of the 69 prisoners, 64 were released from Sajiwa Jail while the remaining five from Central Jail, Imphal. They were released in compliance with the Supreme Court’s directives, an official source said.

They were released on interim bail/parole for three months by the concerned courts of Manipur on the recommendation of the High Powered Committee headed by Justice Kh Nobin Singh as chairman.

The committee was constituted by Manipur government to decongest the prisons in the state in view of the outbreak of corona virus in the country.

State chief secretary Dr J Suresh Babu is the secretary and additional DGP (prisons) P Doungel is the member of the committee.

The released prisoners were transported and dropped to their respective residences by the concerned district police in view of the present lockdown and curfew in the state, the source added.

Of the two jails in the state, Sajiwa Central Jail has a capacity of housing 845 prisoners while Imphal Central Jail has a capacity of housing 250 prisoners.

Official sources said that currently 790 prisoners are lodged at Sajiwa Jail and 50 prisoners were lodged at Central Jail.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country, prisoners in the jails were screened for symptoms typical of flu, fever etc and no new prisoner was introduced in the jails without medical screening.
