Manipur’s Covid death tally crosses 600-mark with 20 deaths in 24 hours

Manipur on Tuesday officially crossed the grim milestone of 600 deaths from the COVID-19 virus, a day after its infection tally crossed 40,000-mark.
The total number of people who have died of the COVID-19 virus in the state rose to 612 with 20 deaths in the past 24 hours, the state health department stated in its bulletin updated at 5pm on Tuesday. 
The figure was the highest single-day deaths reported for the second time ever since the pandemic hit the state in March last year. Same number of fatalities was recorded on May 11 last. 
The data indicates the staggering pace at which deaths have increased since the second wave of the pandemic began in the last week of March this year.
Since May 8, the first day of commencement of the complete curfew in the seven most affected districts of the state, the state has been recording daily deaths of above 10 due to the viral disease.
As per the health department, with nine succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours, Imphal East district, the second worst affected district reported the highest number of fatality. The worst affected Imphal West district reported five casualties even as two reported in Churachandpur and one each in Senapati, Thoubal and Ukhrul districts.
The bulletin further showed adding 624 new infections in the last 24 hours, pushing the overall infection tally of the state to 40,683. State’s infection rally had crossed the 40,000-mark on Monday.
