Meghalaya to further ramp testing for COVID-19: Hek; 33 cases reported so far

The Meghalaya government on Friday decided to further ramp up its testing for COVID-19 to 1000 per day. At present the testing capacity of Meghalaya is 550 per day - 400 tests per day at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) and 150 tests per day at Tura in West Garo Hills district.

 “We have decided to ramp up the testing to 1000 per day in the next one week,” Health and Family Welfare Minister, Alexander Laloo Hek said.

He said another testing unit will become operational most likely after a week at Pasteur Institute in Shillong with a capacity of 400 tests per day. Furthermore, Hek said, as of now, testing of residents returning to the State from outside different parts of the Country is mandatory.

“So far, 13, 113 people stranded in different parts of the country, have returned to the State and around 4000 more returnees are expected to  return to the state,” the Health Minister informed.

Hek informed that out of 9,820 tests, 9,555 yileded negative for COVID-19 while the results of 232 tests are awaited. Meghalaya has so far recorded 33 cases, out of which, 19 are active, and 13 have fully recovered while one had died on April 15.
