Mumbai City FC beat ATK Mohun Bagan 2-0 in the final league stage game of the season to finish top of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2020-21 table and seal the AFC Champions League slot for next seasonat the GMC Stadium in Bambolim, Goa on Sunday.

Mourtada Fall gave Sergio Lobera’s side the lead in the 7th minute, and Bartholomew Ogbeche doubled it in the 39th, with both goals coming from headers from set pieces.

ATKMB only needed a draw to secure top spot, but failed to hold their defensive shape, especially in the first half against wave after wave of Mumbai attack. Already missing Subhasish Bose in their back-four, Antonio Habas’ side suffered another major blow in defence just 19 minutes in when Sandesh Jhingan had to be substituted due to an injury.

Mumbai were without their talismanic midfielder Hugo Boumous, currently serving a four-match suspension, but Ahmed Jahouh and Raynier Fernandes controlled the midfield, and capitalised on gaps in ATKMB’s makeshift defence time and again. In what was a straight shootout to finish top of the league stages between the top two sides, Mumbai City registered a convincing win to finish level on points (40) after 20 league games.

Mumbai finished above Mohun Bagan courtesy of better head-to-head record between the two sides this season.

This is Mumbai’s first Shield triumph and will make its first-ever appearance in the Champions League group stage in 2022.

Both teams had already qualified for the playoffs which will begin on March 5.

The league stage winners will now face fourth-placed FC Goa in the playoffs, while ATKMB will be up against Khalid Jamil’s resurgent NorthEast United FC. FC goa secured their place in the playoffs earlier in the day with a draw vs Hyderabad.

FC Goa hold Hyderabad FC to 0-0 draw, through to playoffs
FC Goa held Hyderabad FC to a goalless draw on Sunday at the Fatorda Stadium here to qualify for the playoffs of the Indian Super League (ISL).
A brilliant defensive performance from Ivan Gonzalez and some crucial saves from goalkeeper Dheeraj Singh Moirangthem were enough for Goa to get the point they needed. They were lucky not to concede late in the game and a good show from Hyderabad was not enough to stop Juan Ferrando’s men from qualifying for their fourth consecutive semifinals, extending their unbeaten run to 13 games.
Hyderabad remain unbeaten in the 12 matches they have played in 2021 but they had to settle for the fifth spot on the table.
