NE reports first COVID-19 case in Manipur

First novel coronavirus (Covid-19) case in the North East has been reported in Manipur, after a 23 year old woman who had recently returned from the United Kingdom tested positive.

The patient, who hails from Thangmeiband, Imphal West, was currently undergoing treatment at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) hospital in Imphal. An official statement of director of state health services Dr K Rajo confirmed about the case.

According to reports, the women flew from London to Delhi on March 19, 2020 and arrived at Imphal on March 21 by flight (AirAsia) via Delhi-Kolkata and Agartala sector.

Though the woman was screened at Imphal airport, she developed symptoms the next day and was rushed to JNIMS.

State Health authorities also quarantined the entire family member of eight at a government designated centre at Unacco School, Imphal West district.

Meanwhile, state authorities have also begun to track and identify the co-passengers of the flight she had boarded to Imphal.

In this regard, state health authorities have issued a notification asking all passengers of AirAsia flight i5-501 to contact the them immediately and not later than 8 a.m. of March 25 for necessary medical examination. It further warned that passengers failing to contact and get themselves medically examined will be prosecuted under section 269 and 270 of the Indian Penal Code, the notification stated

The state government has also locked down Imphal city and promulgated Section 144 CrPC with effect from 8 a.m. of March 24.
