Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla has nominated Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) speaker Sharingain Longkumer to the committee of the presiding officers “to Review the Powers of Presiding Officers Under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution and the Rules made Thereunder.”

According to a statement issued by the NLA secretariat, the panel headed by Rajasthan legislative assembly speaker Dr. CP Joshi consists of Dr. Surjya Narayana Patro — member speaker, Odisha Legislative Assembly; Vishweshwar Hedge Kageri — member speaker, Karnataka Legislative Assembly and Sharingain Longkumer — member speaker, Nagaland Legislative Assembly.

The NLA secretariat stated that a communication to this effect was received from the Lok Sabha secretariat on June 10.

It said the only other representation from the North East in such a committee of presiding officers was Manipur Legislative Assembly speaker Yumnan Kemchand Singh in the committee of the presiding officers to Examine the Matter of Financial Independence of Legislature Secretariat constituted by the Lok Sabha speaker.

The assembly secretariat stated that it was “a well deserved recognition” for the state of Nagaland as much as for NLA speaker Longkumer. With Nagaland having its own share of petitions under the 10th Schedule, the secretariat stated that Longkumer’s association with the Lok Sabha panel would be in the larger interest of Parliamentary democracy.
