Oil leakage sets Assam river ablaze

Upper Assam’s Buri Dihing river caught fire following a crude oil spill from an Oil India Limited (OIL) pipeline in the area. Images of the raging fire have been circulating on social media since.

“No casualty has been reported,” confirmed Dibrugarh SP Sreejith T, adding that the OIL had said a “technical glitch” caused the spillage on January 28.

A press release by OIL spokesperson, Tridiv Hazarika said “... oil managed to trickle into the Buri Dihing river. It appears that some miscreants set fire to oil floating on the river.”

OIL said by the time they reached, the fire had extinguished by itself.

Hazarika said: “This is our internal technical problem but it is under control now.”

An inquiry committee has been set up to find out the root causes of the incident.
