Poshan Maah 2020 - The story

 Along with the rest of the country, Nagaland observed POSHAN Maah as a part of Jan Andolan under  POSHAN Abhiyaan from 1st -30th September2020. The main focus of this year POSHAN Maah is on.. 1) Identification of Severe Acute Malnourished children (SAM) and 2) Development of kitchen Garden in AWC. At the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic many activities were conducted digitally including, online easy writing competition, painting competition, webinars on the different themes of POSHAN Abhiyaan.. A separate tab in the  Jan Andolan Dashboard reflected aggregated outcomes of the POSHAN Abhiyaan with entries of all activities made on periodical basis at district/block& Anganwadi level.  The Jan Andolan Guidelines which are Multi Sectorial and cover 12 basic themes were utilised to activate various platforms at ground level. To create momentum towards Nutrition at the State, District, Block and Village levels, the Social Welfare Department, Nagaland played key role in implementing the various activities during the POSHAN Maah  in co-ordination  with the various convergence  departments. 

Marking the celebration, launching of POSHAN Maah was organized in all Angawandi centres and 60 project headquarters and districts of the state on 7th Sept 2020. Under the shadow of the Coronavirus pandemic, although the Rashtriya Poshan Maah has been celebrated via digital means throughout the country, Nagaland State has been very active in terms of number of participation with huge number of activities throughout the State. Anganwadi workers stood in the frontline of celebration. Actively converging departments mentionable were NSRLM, KVKs, RD and Health and Family Welfare. Huge support and active participation of the people has put the State in the spotlight in the country. 

Several activities were carried out to sensitize masses towards adoption of healthy Nutritional Behaviour at the community level. The convergent departments play a key role for implementing various activities during the Poshan maah. Major activities undertaken  during the month long celebration includes Poshan Panchayat, Local leaders  meetings, Demonstration of Handwashing in schools and Anganwadi Centers, Youth leaders meeting including the church leaders, Awareness camps for adolescent girls,  Mothers meeting, Cleanliness drive in government offices ,educational Institutions,& Anganwadi Centers, Village and Health Nutrition day (VHND), Home -visits and Cooking Competition- preparation of nutritious food from the locally available foods, Poshan seminars, Community based events(CBE),Local food show.  Innovative programmes such as the POSHAN Clubs at Village level, POSHAN Youth Club, Nut. Special focus was made on breastfeeding and covid-19.

Social media was used extensively to propagate and generate awareness on nutrition. Animation videos on -anemia, exclusive breastfeeding, complementary feeding, ANC, importance of hand washing, breastfeeding & covid-19 were made and circulated widely on social media. Radio documentaries, Radio jingles and Radio interview on nutrition were done and aired on AIR Kohima. 

Mention must be made here that in the Ministry of Women and Child Development Instagram Account, activities from Nagaland was highlighted more than 25 times during the POSHAN Maah 2020—the most from a single state all over the country. 

Altogether 4,21,367 numbers  of people participated and 26,190 activities were conduct in the month long celebration.
