Remembering 9/11

America’s war on terror, a term it has been using to raise Cain after the ‘kamikaze-type’ suicide attacks on the Twin Towers on 9/11 may have spurred a global response but nearly 18 years later the fight is far from finished.  America’s war on terror, came  after 19 Islamic terrorists hijacked four civil airliners to carry out a  ‘kamikaze-type’ suicide attacks on the Twin Towers on 9/11 and also jolted the complacent west to accept that terror has already arrived. The terrorists belong to the Al Qaeda group. Eighteen years ago, on September  11,2001 Islamic terrorists hijacked two jet planes- American Airlines flight 11 and United Airlines flight 175- and rammed them on to the famous Twin Towers of New York killing 2996 people and injuring more than 6000 others. In all, four planes were hijacked on that fateful morning of which American Airlines flight 77 was crashed into the Pentagon and the fourth, United Airlines flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The Saudi Arabia link to the 9/11 attacks has not been conclusive due to the reluctance of the Saudis to agree to allow the accused from facing charges. The Justice Department announced   that it would finally name the Saudi official with alleged ties to the al-Qaeda perpetrators of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. Responding to years of pressure from the families of those killed in the attacks, the Justice Department and its law-enforcement arm, the FBI, decided to declassify the name of the Saudi official “in light of the extraordinary circumstances of this particular case.”  The US  Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is  investigating Fahad al-Thumairy and Omar Ahmed al-Bayoumi, Saudi nationals who had allegedly helped the attackers. The two   were attached to Saudi Arabia’s US embassy at the time of the attacks. The case has long threatened to embarrass the Saudi government, which has repeatedly denied links to al-Qaeda, and would leave it exposed to claims of damages that could reach billions of dollars. In all 19 men, 15 of them Saudis, took part in the plot to hijack four commercial aircraft and crash them into New York’s World Trade Center, the Pentagon and possibly the White House or Congress. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, and families have sued seeking damages from the Saudi government. The victims’ families suing the Saudi government have been demanding for the identity of that person to be released. Rumours have tied the individual to the Saudi royal family. But his identity has remained classified as Washington and Riyadh worked closely after the attacks to root out al-Qaeda’s network across the Middle East and South Asia. Actually, the terror that the USA is now forced to confront  comes in the shape and form of Osama Bin Laden, who was killed in an operation by US Navy  Seals in Abottabad Pakistan on May 2, 2011and the Talibans. Both Osama and the Talibans were the creations of the US in its proxy  fight against the then USSR’s occupation of Afghanistan. The US not only created a Frankenstein but also helped Pakistan to cement its relations with various terrorist groups fighting against the USSR forces in Afghanistan. India is also a victim of Pakistani Islamic terrorism as exposed by the deadly 26 November 2008 Mumbai attack.
