 Farmers encouraged to maintain kitchen gardens

AICRP (vegetable crops), Nagaland Centre, SASRD NU under Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) conducted a summer vegetable seeds distribution programme at Medziphema village and farmers’ square on July 20. 

In a press release, SASRD NU informed that the objective of the programme was to highlight the importance of package of practices in vegetable production and to help the farmers learn benefits and advantages of growing vegetable crops in the kitchen gardens. 

The main objective of kitchen gardening was to produce fresh and nutritious vegetables for family throughout the year and better utilisation of surrounding land and kitchen water.

Looking at consumption and production rate of vegetables in Nagaland and their importance in human health, in-charge, TSP and scientists of AICRP (VC), department of horticulture, SASRD NU professor, Akali Sema felt the need to encourage kitchen gardening among tribal farmers of Nagaland. 

The programme was coordinated by Dr. Moakala Changkiri and Dr. Aastik Jha.

Meanwhile, TSP-onion, department of horticulture, Nagaland centre, SASRD NU also conducted a Kharif onion seed distribution programme along with other inputs such as Agro shade nets and organic inputs for four best performing onion beneficiaries at New Socüünoma village on July 20.
