Self-inflicted body blow

By Nagaland Post | Publish Date: 6/10/2021 1:39:14 PM IST

Congress lost another of its well known ‘youth leader’ when former close aide of Rahul and CWC member and 47-year oldJiten Prasada defected to the BJP On June 9,2021. Jitendra joins the growing list of former ‘Team Rahul” aides who have jumped ship. These included- Jyotiraditya Scindia (BJP), Ashok Tanwar (ABM), Alpesh Thakur (BJP), Ashok Chowdhury (JDU), Priyanka Chaturvedi (SS) ; prominent leader in the north east, Pradyut Deb Barman (TIPRA)and Rita Bahuguna Joshi (BJP). Jiten Prasada comes from a Brahmin background whose family have been traditional Congress members. Jiten’s defection re-exposes the internal crisis within the Congress at the national level and the unpreparedness and desperation of the party in UP just months before the 2022 assembly election. Jitin Prasada, isthe second big Brahmin and Congress leader to join the BJP after Rita Bahuguna Joshi in Uttar Pradesh. Jitin Prasada is one among the G-23 dissident letter writers and leaders who have demanded a total revamp of the party organisation and election of a full time president. Sonia currently is interim president, a post that does not exist in the Congress constitution. However, in the Congress, the party rules or constitution are not applicable to the most privileged members of the ‘Nehru- Gandhi family.’ Despite being among the G-23 Jiten was made AICC-in charge for West Bengal where he did a poor job of the election. He did a poor job as AICC in-charge of West Bengal where the party’s electoral fortune nosedived from 44 seats won in 2016 to zero in 2021. Jiten Prasada was unhappy with his party for forging an unholy alliance with the communal muslim party, Indian Secular Front (ISF), led by Furfura Sharif’s influential cleric Abbas Siddiqui. It was something the Brahmin abhorred and so too most leaders in the Congress. However, such illogical and suicidal decisions are taken by the ‘Supreme High Command’ of the AICC and no one can dare question them. So much has been written about what is going wrong with the Congress and the probable factors that has led the party on a free fall since 2014. The crisis within the Congress is mainly because the party has never been out of power for long. And when that period becomes long enough, say to seven years since 2014, members find it difficult to play their role as the opposition. Of course, the problem gets worse when the party’s interim president is only interested to hand over the mantle of the family party back to her sulking son. The so-called “next generation of leaders” of the Congress, led by 50-year old Rahul, was a formidable team. It once comprised of many dynamic leaders a few among which were: 50-year old Jyotiraditya Scindia, 47-year old Jiten Prasada, 41year old Priyanka Chaturvedi, 49-year old Priyanka Vadra, 43-year old Sachin Pilot and 44-year old Milind Deora etc. Most have left the party and more like Sachin, Deora and Sidhu may also follow suit. The Congress used to be a party that attracted the young and best in the country and produced great leaders too. Unfortunately, the Congress appears to be in a hurry in committing hara-kiri. Ironically, many prominent leaders have left the party and ironically fulfilling the BJP vow for a mukth- Congress Bharat.
