Shopkeepers here chose to down their shutters on Monday after a team of health workers and police were seen conducting random testing in the morning. And even before the scheduled time for closure at 2 p.m., the entire town and some colonies wore a deserted look by afternoon.

Except for few street vendors, ATM booths and pharmacies, all shops and business establishment were closed before 2 p.m.

One shopkeeper told Nagaland Post that the shopkeepers downed their shutters for fear of having to undergo random testing for Covid-19. He said samples of few shopkeepers were nonetheless collected for testing during the morning drive.

Meanwhile, speaking to this correspondent, deputy commissioner Kohima Gregory Thejawelie said he was not aware of the development, clarifying there was no such order for closure of shops except the previous one that allowed shops to remain open between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The DC guessed that the shopkeepers might have decided to close their shops as a preventive measure since there was a surge of Covid-19 positive cases even among the shopkeepers and street vendors.

Asked whether District Task Force (DTF), Kohima would recommend total lockdown in the district, Thejawelie said this would be known only after the containment period got over.

He explained that after the containment period ends on May 12, DTF would hold a meeting to analyse the situation and then submit recommendations/ report to the State government of the past seven days, after which the government would take a decision.
