SJC organises training prog for peer counsellors

Students’ well-being and peer counselling (SWPC) committee of St John College, Dimapur organised a training programme for peer counsellors selected for the new academic year on July 17. 

A press release from St John College media cell informed that the programme was attended by 16 peer counsellors and some teaching and non-teaching staff of the institution. 

During the programme, college administrative head Peter Banks highlighted the importance of having a committee of this nature in the institution and spoke about the stigmas associated with mental health. 

While delivering the presidential address, principal of the college and member of SWPC committee professor ST Janetius spoke about the history of peer counselling and why and how it was introduced in the college. 

Assistant professor of economics and member of SWPC committee Sumita Banik Saha spoke about the responsibilities of a peer counsellor in the college such as helping with the orientation of new students, helping students with disciplinary issues among many others. 

Meanwhile, guest speaker of the programme post-graduate student of psychology, Lovely Professional University and former student of the college, Asha Thapa shared her insights on how to be a better peer counsellor.

She also spoke about body language and manner of speaking that a peer counsellor must possess while performing his/her roles.

She further spoke about the importance of maintaining confidentiality while performing the role.

The programme was followed by a Q and A session.
