St.Nicholas, Noel Baba, Santa Claus!

St. Nicholas which has withstood the ravages of time and doubter. It seems that near Nicholas’ home in Patara (Demre) there was a poor nobleman who had three beautiful daughters. The family lived in a shabby palace with hardly enough to eat. Worse, the three daughters wanted to get married, but there was no money for a dowry or wedding. Since in those days it was impossible to marry off a daughter unless there was enough money for a dowry or wedding, it seemed that the daughters would have to “take up a life of sin” in order to earn to keep. Young Nicholas supposedly heard of the family’s plight and decided to help.

According to the legend, “one night when it was dark, Nicholas went to the shabby palace and threw a bag of gold through the window and ran away before he would be seen.” Although the nobleman and his daughters were surprised and happy, back home Nicholas felt bad. He realized that he had left enough gold for only one daughter. He returned a second night and again felt sad for not having left more. He came back a third time, and finding the windows repaired, climbed the roof and tossed the gold down the chimney where it landed in the girls stocking, hung by the fireplace to dry. Later, the legend goes, Nicholas became a very holy and famous man and as was the custom among Christians in this day made a journey to the Holy Land. As a result the idea of gift giving especially of children and the unfortunate spread far from Turkey. Noel Baba, St Nicholas, Santa Claus lives on in many lands around the globe. It all started in Turkey centuries ago.
