Security force on Wednesday engaged in a gunfight with a group of suspected NSCN (I-M) armed cadres in Manipur’s interior Noney district. Police said there was no report of casualty on either side in the fire exchange reported near Chingmei (Pungsanmei) village, about 12 km south of Khoupum police station of Noney district, adding that the fire exchange lasted for around an hour, police here said.

The exchange of fire reportedly ensued after the armed cadres suspected to belong to NSCN(I-M) outfit opened fire towards the troops of 29 Assam Rifles while it was conducting a search operation in the area. The troops based in Khoupum Valley of Noney district launched the operation based on specific information regarding presence of some armed cadres in the area, the report said.
Frightened by the sounds of cross firing, villagers of Chingmei and its neighbouring reportedly shouted to suspend the cross firing.
They also marched to the site where the gunfight took place to intervene and stop the confrontation from escalating. The security force reportedly continued the operation with reinforcement even after the cross firing. There was no report of any suspect picked up.
