Teenage gang rape victim dies in Manipur

A 16-year-old girl who abandoned after she was allegedly raped died at the ICU ward of a hospital in Imphal around 2 pm on Thursday where she battled for her life.

Shocked and angry relatives of the victim stormed the chief minister’s secretariat demanding befitting action against the culprit(s). The teenage girl was admitted  at the ICU ward of RIMS hospital on Wednesday morning after she was picked by a team of Mayang Imphal police station of Imphal West from a roadside pond at Yengdoupat village. She was first found by morning walkers who saw her lying there. Police suspect the girl was sexually assaulted before she was left to die. Police investigating the case have arrested her boyfriend identified as Md Arish alias Maja Khan (19) of Heibongmakhong village late yesterday evening and are searching for five others who were still at large. 

The girl went missing after she came out of her home on Tuesday afternoon as reported by her family who filed a missing report with the police. Soon after news of her death spread, her relatives and people from her village  turned up and stormed the chief minister’s secretariat where they engaged in a brief struggle with police who blocked them from entering the secretariat complex. At the gate, they shouted various slogans demanding immediate booking of other culprits involved in the case and award them befitting punishment demanding that the culprits be hanged to death.

The angry mob also partially damaged the house of the suspect after intervention by police.

In their bid to control the mob, police fired tear gas shells and mock bombs.

With tension running high in the area, a large number of armed police personnel have been deployed at the area to prevent any further untoward incident.
