Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (ICAR-KVK) Peren, Jalukie in collaboration with ICAR research complex for North East Region (NER), Nagaland centre, Jharnapani conducted seed distribution programme at Beisumpuikam village with selected farmers on June 14.

In a press release, principal scientist & head, KVK Peren, Dr. K.L. Meena informed that during the programme, package of practices of lowland rice cultivation was discussed by ACTO, PBG KVK Peren, Dr. Patu K. Zeliang for seed production of lowland paddy RCM-9 to meet the demand for seeds.

Under oil seed promotion, cultivation practices of sesame were discussed for increasing production and productivity by scientist, PBG, ICAR Jharnapani, Dr. Harendra Verma and his team members SRFs Sakuonuo Theunuo and Imtijungla Jamir.

Under the programme, two quintals of lowland paddy RCM-9 and three high yielding varieties of sesame were distributed to the farmers to cover 10 hectares along with plant protection chemicals.

Towards the end of the programme, chairman Beisumpuikam village, Tadibe related how farmers in the village were cultivating rice only for grain purpose before, however due to low-income they had moved to mustard cultivation for higher income, then to sesame which was more profitable compared to mustard and Colocasia, which he found gave them the highest profit.

In this regard, he expressed his happiness with the improved and high yielding varieties of rice and sesame provided by the ICAR for increasing their incomes and giving all its efforts to uplift their livelihood.

Village council members along with paddy and oilseed cultivator representatives attended the programme.
