Try to copy their insides

By Nagaland Post | Publish Date: 9/12/2020 12:37:50 PM IST

Today, because of the lockdown, a small group of our Ao community in our colony often conduct fellowships and services in Whatsapp. A few days back I was asked to talk on a particular topic for 3 minutes and send it to our Whatsapp admin. I am a graduate from Kohima Science College so I thought I’d better speak in English so that the message could reach more people. The next day my daughter came rather upset and said that my audio message was in some facebook and whatsapp group but for the wrong reason, that is because of my poor English accent or rather pronunciation, it seemed like some young people were making fun of it in the social media. My daughter asked me why I had to speak in English when the service was conducted only among our community and that now she was hesitant even to log in into her facebook.

Well what can I say, I was born and brought up in Mokokchung in the 70’s, later married to an Angami lady and settled in Kohima. I just want to say something to those foreigners- type people having fun at my expense in particular and to the Young Naga people in general that I appreciate how fine you can talk English, it’s because you have been taught that way, I am also speaking the way I was taught. Now coming to my main point. Today many of you try to speak like the British people, dress like the Americans and give extra efforts and try so hard to look cute like the Koreans especially while taking photographs. So apart from these, what else do you copy? 1. Their hard working nature? 2. Their cleanliness? 3. Their achievements in the field of sports, science, technology?. Today almost all the states in NE have players in the ISL (Indian Super League) earning them lakhs in just one season, why is it that we don’t have one player even after all these years. How many Nagas have ever qualified for the Common Wealth Games, Asian Games, Olympics etc. Has any Naga ever gone to the moon? Right from our kitchen to our toilets and to the street, we use things invented and discovered by others. The Koreans, Japanese, French, Russians, Germans etc all speak English but in their own accent and nobody mocks at them because they are achievers in themselves. So dear young friends, if you really want to imitate others, try to copy not only their outer appearances but try to copy their insides as well. I’ll be happy if Someday the world come to know about the Nagas through our successes and achievements in various fields, if it happens, I won’t be surprise if one fine day an American come to Nagaland and asks my Angami wife – “halo- Aanti….wher…. are… yo.. koin ho..””?
