SHILLONG, FEB 28 | Publish Date: 2/28/2020 12:48:06 PM IST

A Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) activist was killed and many others injured after a clash broke out between two communities at Ichamati in Meghalaya bordering Bangladesh on Friday.

Sources said that scores of KSU activists and a policeman sustained injuries and several vehicles were also vandalized during the clash.   The village chief of Ichamati village and the police personnel who rushed to control the situation were assaulted by the attackers.

The government or state government are yet to come out with an official statement on the incident, but police officials on condition of anonymity said the clash erupted when a group of non-locals armed with sticks and machetes cornered KSU leaders after a public meeting against Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and demand for implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Ichamati village.  The leaders of the KSU and Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People had organized an anti-CAA public meeting in Ichamati village.

Ichamati village falls under the Sohra civil sub-division of East Khasi Hills district, and is around more than 85 km from Shillong.

Videos of non-locals marching with sticks and machetes have also went viral on the social media.

In the clash, many KSU activists from Sohra, Shella and adjoining areas were injured, the police official said.

KSU General Secretary Donald Thabah said  that leaders and other activists of the organisations came under attack while they were having lunch. Thabah said that a KSU activist identified as Lurshai Hynniewta succumbed to his injuries at Sohra Community Health Centre.
